History

Belur Hoysala Chennai was formerly known as Madras and before the advent of the Portuguese in the 16th century; it was quite renowned with the seafarers, spice traders and cloth merchant. The British East India Company in the year 1639 established a settlement in the fishing village of Madraspatnam.

Chennai has the oldest municipality in India which was granted by James II in the year 1688 since there were towns that grew up here.

There was always a tug of war between the French and the British over this city and in the year 1756, the French were forced to withdraw themselves back and the Britons constructed Fort St George here. Subsequently, it rose to prominence in the 19th century and became the seat of Madras Presidency.
